What can I say? A truly quirky hotel, which appears to be in a graceful state of decline from its obviously grandiose former days, and I loved it! If you want spotless modern rooms, with all mod cons, do yourself a favour and book into a Travelodge or something similar. If you're looking for character, something different perhaps, the City Hotel Matyas IS a good choice. I cannot fault its location, I'm 66 years of age, and I walked everywhere from here. There was a heatwave during my stay, temperatures dancing around the 40c mark, but the locals didn't seem phased at all. Little old ladies tottering around with sun umbrellas, and little old men like me keeping to the shade! Bars, restaurants, shops, everything is on your doorstep. The outward facade of the hotel is fascinating, along with the surrounding buildings, all of which are beautifully lit come nightfall. I have had better breakfasts, but you can eat as much as you desire, and the coffee is from machines, so take it however you want it! Staff attitude varied, but everyone was polite and helpful. Helps if you can perhaps speak a little German, and that goes for lots of places in Budapest. To sum up......I'll be back!
The best parts of the hotel were definitely the ac in the rooms and the location. The location was incredible, we practically walked everywhere and most things you’d want to visit are in a 1-2km radius. Szimpla kert, the Danube boat sightseeings, easy to get to the castle as well as the fisherman’s bastion. The rooms were clean, they had some weird noises, probably from the pipes, but after the first night you barely noticed it. However, the breakfast left much to desire, but there was always enough good things to start your day. The coffee was really sweet and sugary, which some might like, but I do not.
After reading the other reviews, I felt I had to write my own. This hotel is in a great location, lots of things within walking distance. It was a bit strange that our rooms were right by the entrance, before reception, but not a problem. The rooms were perfectly fine with air conditioning , clean and a great shower with plenty of hot water. There were lots of stairs to breakfast but the lift worked fine, breakfast was your typical continental assortment and good. The staff were very friendly and helpful too. Would recommend.
