Extremely disappointing stay. I would not recommend this hotel. My experience at Excel Monte Mario in Rome was extremely poor, and unfortunately there were problems with both the room itself and the services available at the property. I stayed in Room 201, and several basic things simply did not work: * No working internet/Wi-Fi in the room. In 2026, having no usable internet connection in a hotel room is completely unacceptable, particularly for anyone who needs to work or stay connected. * The telephone in the room did not work, meaning that even contacting reception from the room was not possible. * The shower in the second bathroom did not work properly, so part of the bathroom facilities provided with the room were effectively unusable. * There were ants inside the room, which is completely unacceptable from a cleanliness and maintenance perspective. The location makes the experience even worse. The hotel feels extremely isolated, with very little immediately around it. There is no proper restaurant service at the hotel apart from breakfast, and there are essentially no additional food services available if you want to eat during the day or in the evening. If you want to find somewhere to eat, you need to leave the property and walk approximately 600–800 metres, and in some cases around 1 kilometre, before reaching restaurants or other useful services. The same inconvenience applies when trying to arrange transport or find a taxi. This is particularly frustrating because when a hotel is located away from restaurants and other amenities, you would reasonably expect the hotel itself to compensate by providing decent food, room service or other facilities. Here, you effectively have neither: an isolated location with very limited services inside the hotel. Taken individually, one issue might have been understandable. But having no internet, a non-working telephone, a non-working shower, ants in the room, no restaurant for lunch or dinner, and an inconvenient location all during the same stay made the overall experience extremely disappointing. These are not luxury extras. Internet access, functioning room equipment, cleanliness and basic hotel services are fundamental expectations. Based on my experience in Room 201, I would not stay at Excel Monte Mario again and would not recommend it, particularly to business travellers, families, or anyone who expects to be able to eat conveniently at their hotel or use reliable internet.
